Food Plot Tips

Year Around Success

Food Plot Tips

🌱 Start With a Soil Test

A simple soil test can save time and money while maximizing results. Most food plots perform best with a pH between 6.0–7.0.

☀️ Sunlight Matters

Choose locations that receive at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily.

🌧️ Plant Before Rain

The best time to plant is just ahead of a forecasted rain event to ensure good germination.

🚜 Control Weeds First

Competing vegetation steals moisture and nutrients. Proper weed control is critical to food plot success.

🌾 Don't Plant Too Deep

Most food plot seeds should be planted ¼ inch deep or less. When in doubt, plant shallow.

🦌 Match the Seed to the Season

Plant warm-season crops in spring and summer and cool-season blends in late summer and fall.

🌱 Fertilize for Maximum Growth

Healthy soil produces healthier forage, stronger attraction, and better wildlife nutrition.

⏰ Timing Is Everything

Even the best seed can't overcome poor planting conditions. Focus on proper timing, moisture, and seed-to-soil contact.

Elite Tip

A mediocre seed planted correctly will outperform a premium seed planted poorly. Focus on preparation, timing, and soil health first.

One of the biggest mistakes we see is clients creating a food source to target a small time of the year.  We tell our clients to create a sanctuary that will hold their wildlife year-round.  This increases nutrition, enabling top-notch results.  A healthy buck will grow a healthy-sized set of horns!  By doing so, you will increase your success rate and manage your herd.

Something to Think About...

You spend...

$100,000 on a farm or $10,000 on a hunting lease

                     +

$25,000 + on hunting equipment (clothing/stands/ATV)

Total Investment = $ $ $ $ $ LOTS $ $ $ $ $

How much of your investment are you putting into attracting deer to your farm?  Always wonder why some guys kill big deer?  This might be why...

Deer Must Eat

Deer eat or are searching for food over 75% of the time.  With that being said, I ask people all the time:  What do you offer on your farm that nobody else does?  What do you have that keeps deer from jumping that fence to the neighbor's?

What Percentage should I spend?

A good rule of thumb is somewhere between 25% to 40%.  I have spoken to more than one person who has attracted a buck from over 5 miles away.  If a buck likes the area, it won't leave!  If they don't leave, your buck population may just get better!

Don’t kill that Monster Buck once every few years… …do it EVERY YEAR!
